Going for a dunk on Dunk

The leaflet that had been pushed under the door during the night informed all passengers of a slight change on the ship's itinerary. Instead of going to Fitzroy Island, which was closed due to some reconstruction of the resort, they would be going instead to Dunk Island, another of the well known tropical islands that had extensive rainforest coverage, and a large resort.

"Sounds alright," Cal says as they walked down the hall to the dining room, reading the flyer. "Island rainforest is island rainforest, right?"

"Yeah, it will look the same to me," Finn agrees, yawning. There aren't many people for the breakfast seating he notices this morning. "Must've been a good night in the casino, or in the cabaret. Place looks deserted."

Cal nods, but doesn't mind, and they grab some juice and cereal to start with and go to sit at a table near a window that showed the island a short boat ride away. As Finn sat next to him Cal put his hand on his husband's thigh and drank his juice, pointing to the island with the glass as he finished. "Reckon a walk and a swim sounds pretty good, hey?" he suggests as he starts to eat his cereal.

"Yup. I'm definitely ready for that. Y'know, I wonder...if they hadn't told us that this was a different island, I wonder how many people would have figured it out?" Finn muses, as he empties his glass and looks around for some means to get English muffins. He spies the toasters, ranged against a wall, and heads over to make a stack, then brings them back to the table. There are only 4 or 5 other couples in the whole dining room.

While Finn's grabbing the muffins Cal goes and brings back a plate full of eggs and bacon, and assembles some on the muffins Finn loads onto Cal's plate. As he tucks into them one of the waitresses brings around the pots of tea and coffee, filling up their cups for them while they ask about the island.

"I haven't been to Dunk for ages, as we normally go to Fitzroy, but it has some great walks," she tells them, "and yes, definitely worth going with your swimmers, as there are some lovely beaches and swimming spots too!"

Another Perfect Day in Paradise

"Sounds like you're up here a lot. How come we only came once before, then?" Finn wonders aloud. "You knew how much the Reef had drawn me to Australia--why didn't you bring me up here and have your wicked way with me more than once?" He's not being confrontational, he's just trying to understand what Cal was thinking during the three years they lived together on the Gold Coast.

Nodding, Finn chews and swallows his muffin before he asks, "How long have you worked on a cruise ship? Sounds like you really love it."

"Only about a year now, but I was born in Cairns and grew up in Townsville, so this is 'home' to me," she enthuses. "I'm going to study marine biology, down at Townsville, when I save up enough to have something to live on, and by then I'll hopefully have a good enough rep with the cruise line that I can get work during the vacations."

"Sounds like the way to do it!" Cal says, nodding enthusiastically. "Being a student up here and studying marine biology with this at your front door would have to be one of the best gigs ever for a degree!" he laughs.

She nods, agreeing with him. "I've always wanted to understand the Reef, why it was here, why the animals that live in are here. M'mum told me when I was five that there were special people who did that all day long, and I said 'that's what I want to be'--and I've never changed." She smiles and says, "If you need anything else, just ask. M'name's Elsie." Then she heads over to another table to pour coffee and fetch more tea.

"Seems like the perfect childhood. To be fascinated by the sea, and have this on your doorstep," Finn says.

"Sure does," he nods in agreement, as the waitress moves to greet a couple of teenage girls who'd just arrived looking rather sleepy.

He gives a small nod in their direction. "Weren't they partying hard last night? When we went up for that midnight dessert raid?" he murmurs to Finn. The two young women had been with a few others and had apparently, and obviously been working their way through the ship's cocktail menu, and from what they'd been saying had had a few new ones mixed in their honour.

"I'm amazed," Finn responds. "After what they drank last night, they should need to be wrung out, just to get the alcohol out of their systems." He watches as the two titter about something, obviously still a little drunk. "You know, it hurts to be high that long--when you come down. Bet they keep drinking to ward off the drop."

"Yeah, reackon," Cal agrees, looking at the two girls for only a moment longer then returning his focus to his food, and the view out the window. He bites into another mouthful of bacon and egg on muffin with sauce and grabs his serviette to catch the run of yellow yolk that starts down his chin.

Finn lifts his coffee cup, to sip some more, then returns it to its saucer. "Should we go ready to swim, or would you rather hike? I suppose...we could do both," he adds, shrugging.

[info]callan_dean

September 16 2005, 15:16:45 UTC 6 years ago

"Mmm, definitely both," Cal nods preparing to take another mouthful. "They said in the flyer there are a few good beaches on the other side, at the end of the walks, and then a return path that follows the beaches around, back to the wharf where the tenders will be waiting to ferry us back here."

September 16 2005, 15:42:24 UTC 6 years ago

"Right. Then let's do that," Finn instantly agrees. "I'm gonna go easy on breakfast, and instead take a bunch of food to eat on the way--fruit, scones, granola." He waves for Elsie, and asks her for a plate they can use to take food back to the room for just this purpose. She comes back with a clean one almost immediately, and Finn begins assembling his hiking supplies.

Cal doesn't slow down on breakfast, but then he never has. Instilled in him since he was a child was the old motto that it was the most important meal of the day, and as usual he was giving it the true reverence he felt it deserved. And the buffet. He follows Finn across to the food again and grabs another rasher of bacon to chew on as they gather some muffins and fruit. He spies some croissants with cheese and ham and grabs a few of those too, putting some paper napkins around each.

Finn can't help smiling as he watches his lover pile food into napkins and both hands. Cal has always loved eating, and it's a miracle of sorts that Finn loves cooking, since it means they're so well matched. Once they've got all the supplies they need, they head back to the room, where Finn empties a small fanny-pack of its contents and carefully stows the food inside. He knows now that the tender will supply water to them just before they debark, so he'll get water later on.

Quickly he changes into swim trunks, pulling a pair of long shorts on over them, then comfortable shoes and a bright red shirt. THe room key and a big tube of sunscreen complete the ensemble (in addition to the lube he's tucked into one of the short pockets). "You ready?"

[info]callan_dean

September 16 2005, 16:23:12 UTC 6 years ago

Cal comes out of the bathroom and looks at Finn's shirt, nodding as he manages to keep a straight face. "You're going to show the local parrots up babe," he says, eyeing the brightness of the shirt. "At least I won't lose you on the walk!" he adds, giving Finn a kiss on the cheek and patting his shoulder.

"And yep," he adds, picking up his sunnies and a cap, throwing the small backpack with their towels and sunscreen onto his shoulder. "Let's not be here!"

As they leave the room, Finn watches the other guests head for the gangway down to the small runabout boat that will take them in to the island. He's trying to puzzle through something he doesn't quite understand about what Cal said. "Show up the...? Fuck, it's red, not green, isn't it?" The shirt was one he'd only gotten the day before in the shop, and for once, he'd taken a chance on buying something he didn't have a clerk describe to him. "Probably look like a flaming fire engine truck, don't I?"

"No, just a very lovely tropical parrot!" Cal says, with a reassuring wink. The colours of the other passenger's clothing meant Finn's didn't look out of place at all, most seeming to have adopted bright colours for their day on the tropical island.

They are soon on the island, walking along the pier and feeling the difference of walking on solid surfaces after the last three days of only being on board a floating vessel.

"You just enjoy that I look like a giant great stop sign. Nuts," Finn sighs, as they walk to the edge of the forest canopy and then under and into the huge spread of trees that marks the edge of the rainforest.

September 17 2005, 01:11:31 UTC 6 years ago

Cal looks at him for a moment, trying to figure out what the comment was referring to, realisation dawning suddenly when he sees Finn standing there with his hands on his hips.

"Naaah, more like a red flag to a bull, and I have a certain bull by the name of Angus that is VERY attracted to red.. so if you don't hurry up and get that gorgeous body of mine, that you use to get around in, up this track so I can molest you under the shadows of the rainforest I will just have to do so here!"

[info]finley_bryan

September 17 2005, 01:24:23 UTC 6 years ago

Meekly, Finn follows Cal deeper into the rainforest, trailing after his lover on the narrow walk as he replies, "Angus likes red? You never said anything, Angus. Naughty. Gonna have to do something about that, I am."

September 17 2005, 01:36:13 UTC 6 years ago

Cal snickers and jerks sideways a little when a pair of parrots suddenly take to flight from where they'd been sitting on a low branch beside the track. "Woah, steady on there fellas, y' could give a bloke a heart failure!" he laughs. He turns to Finn, his lover catching up within two steps.

"I thought I'd heard him mention it," Cal told him innocently.

"Well, you never told me. I've probably been wearing all sorts of things to turn him off, and you're saying I shoulda been wearing red all this time??" Finn asks, with mock annoyance. Now that they're away from all the crowds, Finn puts a hand onto Cal's shoulder, and gives his lover a meaningful look that just reeks of sex. "Maybe he should talk with me directly."
